Trenches

TRENCHES

I’ve lived in the trenches
where mosquitos suck at skulls
trading brain fluid like cards at a midnight poker game
Royal Flushes blazing
guns swinging

fighting used to be fun
like watching a cat massage the limbs of a couch
to threads
like a line-less till at the grocery store. I felt
like a giant stomping on rose bushes
while thorns prickled my ankles

lovers dancing at night
under a moon falling from stilts
hoarse throats
crushed toes

fighting used to be fun
like throwing recyclables in the
trash
like wild day dreams
bored at the wheel
highways always lead to big city lights and crying all night

now that time is eating at my face
I pick my battles

all the ruckus gives me a
headache

I’d rather wait
watching white blossoms fall to
cement
be grinded to dust by careless
footsteps

while mine sink into the dirt
